Establishing a vision and path for restructuring an IT department

The Brief

Due to an increase in government funding, TeachFirst was going through a significant expansion phase and planned to relocate to a new headquarter within six month. The organisation was concerned about their IT department's ability to cope with the growth and asked us to develop a strategy for addressing these concerns.

The Approach

We proposed a high level programme structure for changing the IT department. The proposal was based around:

  1. Enable the immediate growth by migrating selected services to the cloud and in-house infrastructure to hosted data centres.
  2. Support the office relocation and expansion efforts
  3. Optimise the architecture, governance and processes to turn the department into a proactive business partner

The Challenges

The IT staff was predominantly technical; the proposed IT structure would require a shift towards a more service/process oriented team.
We addressed this concern by working closely with the IT staff to communicate the upcoming changes, identify aspirations and provide the opportunity for training.

The Result

We presented the strategy to the company board who agreed with our proposal and continued with the implementation.
